IOL hit by Anonymous Africa

AnonymousOne of South Africa’ largest news portal IOL.co.za has been attacked by hacktivist group ‘Anonymous Africa’ through a DoS (denial of service) attack.

Why?

“ignoring the genocide against the Ndebele people and for supporting a dictator”

IOL recently published an article titled, ” Mugabe hero of African Liberation” to which most sane people would take as a seriously misguided feature to publish, especially with all the emotion that comes with this doos.

‘Anonymous Africa’ told IOL that this would take place at 11am and true to their word nailed the site at 11am sharp.

Twitter turned 7 and threw together this nice little video to remissness

Twitter

To help celebrate its 7th birthday, Twitter released a video that recaps memorable moments in its history.

Pretty hectic that twitter is only seven years old, feels like its been around for a hell of a long time.

Nice little video though that shows Twitters growth, from Jack Dempsey first ‘tweet’ to Barak Obama’s tweet about winning the elections.

Facebook’s Newsfeed changes into a Personalized Newspaper

Facebook announces changLast Thursday Facebook announced another one of their famous changes when no one asked for it.  The premise so to speak is a more focused approached to photo’s, graphics and video’s. Why we ask…well since going public the company has taken a pounding in it’s share price and the valuation has seemingly decreased, so the new look is hoping to attract more advertiser’s with it’s new layout.

“The News Feed, which provides a running list of updates from a user’s network, will serve as a “personalized newspaper” for Facebook’s 1 billion users, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said at a news conference at the company’s California headquarters”.

“The tech giant has struggled to convince investors of its business model, and Facebook shares remain far below their initial public offering price of $38. But investors cheered the new design Thursday, pushing the stock up 4 percent, to close at $28.58.

The redesign could benefit companies that can quickly attract consumers’ attention with eye-catching advertising. It could also hurt smaller companies that can’t sink a lot of money into complex campaigns, said Peter LaMotte, who leads the digital team at Levick, a District-based communications firm”.

So the new catch word that’s being touted is ‘engagement’ as Facebook is aiming to keep users on the platform for longer periods of time and away from new social networks.

Quite keen to see the new vibe.

OREO Separator Machine part #1

As part of their ‘Cookies vs Creme’ campaign, Oreo with the help of Wieden+Kennedy Portland have put together a series of videos featuring various and unique Oreo separating technique’s.

Oreo parody video and the Oreo separator machine

Yup the humble Oreo is causing some big stirs in the viral marketing world. Many of us here in South Africa wouldn’t be accustomed to the hype it first managed to generate during the Super Bowl, where apparently the lights went out and the chap managing the Twitter account was pretty quick on the ball to tweet “You Can Still Dunk In The Dark” definitely a ‘you had to be there moment’ but sharp nonetheless.

The first in this comical series features one of Wieden+Kennedy Portland’s own copywriters running us through the design and implementation of his “Oreo separator machine, or OSM”

Too good.

Funny shit Helen Zille gets tweeted about

I follow Helen Zille on Twitter and can attest to her pretty quick wit and chirps. But it’s pretty hilarious to see what kak people ask of her through the odd tweet here and there, you would like to think these are just people taking the piss?

Debatable…..a tumblr has been set up by someone whether it be the Premier herself of just a parody  who knows.

Have a laugh at some of the kak she get cc’d in.

Heard of Barry Bateman?

Barry Bateman, one times Eye Witness News reports that seemed to be in the right place at the right time for most of the Oscar Pistorius saga, from arrest to the full bail hearing process. Why is this interesting…basically he went from 17,000 twitter follows to over 100,000 in less than a week.

While the news networks were scrambling there journalist’s and in studio presenters for one of the biggest stories in years, Barry here was on the ground and using social media to provide all that cared to read up to the minute reporting in a splurge of hashtags, retweets, mentions and more followers.

The power of social media, at the coal face of the story, on display for all it’s glory.
